Frequently asked questions

How does matching work?
You do not browse the other side, and they do not browse you. Your navigator reviews everyone and only introduces a homeowner and renter when we believe it is a genuine fit. Every introduction is made by a real person on our team.
Will the other person see my full name or contact details?
No. Homeowners only ever see a renter's first name and the details the renter chooses to share, never their full identity or contact info. The two of you connect through your navigator until a match is confirmed.
When do I find out the exact address?
Renters see a home's approximate neighborhood on a map while reviewing. The exact street address is shared only after a match is confirmed.
How do I schedule my phone interview or site tour? (homeowners)
After you submit your listing, your dashboard shows a Step 1 card to book your phone interview, and then a Step 2 card for your site tour. Each button opens our scheduling page where you pick a time.
What is the difference between short-term and long-term availability?
Long-term means you can offer the space for 30 or more days. Short-term is anything shorter. Homeowners choose this on their listing, and it helps us match you well.
What emails will I get, and who are they from?
Safe Haven emails come from safehaven@werqt.org, and replies go right back to that same inbox, monitored by our team. You will get a few helpful nudges (like scheduling your phone interview) and updates as things move along.
Can I turn off the emails?
Yes. There is an “Email me updates and reminders” toggle on your dashboard. Turning it off stops the reminder emails. (Your navigator may still reach out directly when something needs your attention.)
What is the $1,000 grant?
Homeowners on the Portland program may receive a $1,000 home sharing grant from United Way of Columbia Willamette once a placement reaches 30 days. Following 30 days of a successful tenancy, you can apply for the grant through your dashboard. Homes outside the program do not see grant information.
What is a background check, and will I need one?
Some homeowners ask for a standard background check as part of their listing. If any of your matched homes require one, a background check card appears at the top of your renter dashboard. You confirm your email and state, and Checkr, a trusted background check provider, sends you a secure link to complete it on any device. Results typically come back within 24 hours. Homeowners choose whether to require this; not all homes do.
Is my information private and safe?
Yes. Your information is only visible to you and our staff. The other party never sees your private details, and our system is built so a renter's real identity is never exposed to a homeowner.
What if a home or a renter is not a fit?
Just mark it Not a fit. Nothing is final until everyone agrees, and your navigator keeps looking for a better match.
How do I talk to a real person?
Use the "Need a hand?" form on your dashboard, or email safehaven@werqt.org. Your navigator is happy to help at any step.
